This is a tool for calculating solar panel and battery capacity for campers, boats, overlanders, that sort of thing.

This is the claimed wattage of your solar panel. If you have multiple panels just input the total. |

If you are unsure, leave it at 10% as this is fairly typical (for northern Europe at least) and will give reliable results with some headroom. If you have a real MPPT controller you may want to bump that up by a small amount if you're feeling optimistic. If you're somewhere sunny you might bump it up further. |

Approximate solar output over 24h |
I have very very roughly estimated the output of the solar panel over an average day as a pure % factor of the total daily output, just to show up the cases where your battery might either get flattened overnight or solar output may be more than you can use or store during the day (in both cases due to mis-matched panel & battery). This is purely based on output being zero overnight, and then ramping up and back down from 8am - 8pm every day, obviously a load of factors will change the reality of that for your use case. |
Max discharge: |
Supposedly 50% is considered the most economical use of batteries, around 70% is the maximum considered healthy, discharging further damages battery resulting in a shorter lifespan and reduced useful capacity.

Warning: Do not trust your safety to Javascript calculators!
This was primarily designed to provide approximations. Numbers are based on random info found on the internet and are probably wrong. This is experimental code. You should not trust it. It may be an elaborate hoax. The warranty just expired. |
If you found this useful why not pop some pennies in the pot at LR4x4.com or, if that's not your bag, the good folks at Hampshire & Isle Of Wight Air Ambulance always need petrol money for their helicopter. |
