Dual-speed Twin Electric Fans Using 100% Land Rover parts. I'm still writing this up so there may be errors. Circuit diagrams to follow. It turns out that Freelander cooling fans are an ideal fit onto a Defender radiator: A small trim along the bottom edge, added a strip of aluminium to seat in the original clips that hold the old fan cowling. Camper Power Mk2 For various reasons our setup is not typical of the best way of doing this - in an ideal world we'd have waaay more battery capacity and consequently less (or zero) solar, but here we are. The main reason is purely that we don't want to make more holes in the vehicle to fit extra batteries in or cram big batteries under the seat (it's doable but it makes for ugly under-seat wiring with BIG wires which gives me the jeebies).

Defender Fusebox Upgrade Replace the awful glass fuses with proper ATO blade ones. The Defender (and the Series before it) suffer from awful glass cartridge fuses which seem to be quite unreliable, with the added bonus that they can't really handle much more than ~15 amps continuously without getting hot and either melting the fuse-holder or blowing. History Tracing the history is a work in progress, thanks to the Royal Logistics Corps Archive we have the MOD record card which seems to show a very uneventful life at either RAF Coltishall or RAF Wittering from 1989-2001, seemingly going direct from BCA to Witham Specialist Vehicles to Chris, the first civvy owner who kept it for many years.

The Early Days A.K.A “What have we bought???” (June 2014) The background to all this was that I found a very sweet SIIa 109 Lomas Ambulance / camper on eBay, and rather than do the sensible thing of hitting me and telling me not to buy any more cars my better half let slip that she quite fancied some sort of camper van. De-gassing Alfie came with 2x 120 litre “torpedo” LPG tanks installed as well as a “gas-ring” style vaporiser on the engine, a very basic LPG setup that had been installed by the previous owner at some expense. However, as we'd not be doing mega mileage in this vehicle and we wanted more interior space they had to go. Assorted Mods Little bits and bobs that don't warrant a page each. Guards, Guards! When we bought the 127 it had been fitted with a full set of underbody guards - diff guards, steering guards, fuel tank guard. We removed the fuel tank guard when we changed the tank as it's heavy and frankly the back of the ambulance hangs down so much you'd be hard pressed to hit the tank on anything, especially with the tow-pack/plough we added.

Suspension As purchased, the 127 has some very heavy duty springs plus helper springs, and Koni Heavy Track shocks. Due to a crusty front shock turret failing the MOT we've got Gwyn Lewis shock towers on the front now. Weights * Front ~1180kg (probably 1220kg)
