Right, here's a crash course in engine oil labels (just the official industry body ones, not the OEM specs, 'cos that's a whole load more stuff);

API ones are easy. They are American, but recognised across the world. API

There is so very much bullshit spread by people who don't know what they're on about, or by snake-oil merchants selling you magic in a bottle that “big oil” just don't want you to know about. The test, as with all these magic devices, is that

GL4 and GL5 Vs Bronze Bushings

All GL5 gear oils use Sulphur as the agent that protects the gears. That's why they all smell so lovely.

These components are inherently aggressive to anything with copper in it (brass & bronze included).

If you can get away with a GL-4, use that instead as it has less active chemistry. This is OK for lightly loaded gears working in the same plane, but definitely not for hypoid axles.

Everything goes better with lube...

I have a friend who works for one of the big players in the oil additive industry - no, not Slick50, I mean the additives that proper grown-ups like Exxon, Shell, Mobil, Castrol, etc. put into their base oils to produce the performance required by vehicle manufacturers and industry in general (so presumably everyone from supertankers to jet fighters - they all need oil after all).

Operating Temperatures

Gear Oil

About 70C is the threshold of too hot to touch. Trannies have quite a range of temperature operation. Sometimes as they are often bolted to the engine, the engine temp will transfer to the tranny, so they'll run nearly as hot as the engine housing. They are designed to cope with a fairly wide operating range, so shouldn’t be cause for concern. Somewhere between 50C and 80C would probably be

Can I use Tractor Oil?

A slightly odd one posted by someone on LR4x4 but an enlightening answer nonetheless:

[the additives in the oil are] supplied by either me, or my equivalent in one other company in the world. So you've come to the right bloke. In Shell's case, they take a bit of both. This
